This blog is a visual articulation of MY views of the world around me. I will present various sides of arguments, and always sum them up with my own personal take.

My more entertaining/diverse/ridiculous/lovable blog can be found at http://mrjdjude.tumblr.com/ and I'll do all of my following from that blog as well!

Thanks and enjoy!

Creating art and self from the intersections

This is a post from RVCBard and her blog “Love’s Labors Lost”. I’ve been reading this sister’s blog for quite some time; I was initially turned out to it because of her post about theater and race. In this one she talks about the process of writing her most recent play and articulates her feelings about writing from the “intersections”. Check it out!

People on the Internet Can Be Hella Racist

Sharing this link for a couple of reasons:

  1. The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” is an amazing series and if you don’t know about it, you need to
  2. Big-ups to her for winning an award and giving all people, especially people of color, someone they can relate to and see themselves reflected
  3. I’m saddened but not surprised at the racist comments that ruined her joyous moment.

Please, support the artist you believe in, as this link will show you, everyone doesn’t want to see them do well.

2012: Let’s Pay It Forward

Thanks to You’ve Cott Mail for linking me to this article.

It couldn’t have come at a better time. I was just sent a crowd-sourcing email to help fund a Frat Brother’s upcoming documentary on the step culture at predominantly white institutions. Earlier in the week I received an update about Stefani’s (@steffisaintonge) documentary that she’s shooting in Mexico. Last week an actor friend of mine (@EdwardDaniels) sent me a personal email of thanks for contributing to one of his current projects. This article was the icing on the cake.

I have fallen in love with supporting other artists. It feels wrong of me to ask for support and not give it back when I can. The importance of artistic support can not be stressed enough. It almost comes off as cliche but EVERY dollar helps!

In 2012, challenge yourself to give at least $5 to a project you believe in. You’ll feel great about it and the artists you love will too!

Updates (4/25) and responses from last week’s posts

This week should be kool. I’m attending DC’s version of the Tony’s tonight. Our Managing Director paid for the tickets so I’m gonna go. Missed them last year so I’m excited to finally check them out. Producing mode will be in OVERTIME at work this week. There is a lot to get done on all my projects this week. We’ll have the Colored People’s Theatre casting session for “for colored girls…” on Friday. Any interested actors should email us! I’ll do the photobooth thing all day Saturday. Next week will be kool, but I’ll handle that when I get there.

I’m writing an article for XhibitP. I want to talk about the current state of the Black arts and safe spaces for young, Black artists to create their work. I’ll need some help staying focused and providing enough examples to prove a point so help is greatly appreciated.

Here is my response to K.O.S. Determination’s reblog of my Hip-hop post.

  1. You’re right about the cooning comment. I think my argument, although convoluted, isn’t about cooning but about the line between borrowing someone’s culture/style and applying is as if it were your own, only for a moment, especially if you are only using it to do/say something you normally wouldn’t do/say.
  2. Black culture isn’t Hip-hop and vice versa.
  3. There is nothing new under the sun. Agreed.
  4. The series you linked me to is hella kool!

They also responded to the “Video Girl” movie post and I responded to it here.
